Emotion Drives Seawolves to 73-53 Rout Over No. 15 Toros

Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Having already secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills played nothing like the 15th-ranked team in the nation in a 73-53 rout by host Sonoma State in which the Seawolves led by as many as 28 points on their "Senior Night" and held a double-figure lead for the final 21 minutes 15 seconds of the contest before an announced crowd of 967.

Guard Rashad Bias led the Toros with 13 points off the bench, more than half the 22 points garnered by tonight's starting five.

With the CCAA regular season concluding with last night's action, Chico State earned the No. 7 seed, and will travel to Carson for Tuesday, March 1 match-up, beginning at 7:00 pm.  The Wildcats and Toros hooked in last year's 1st round as well, with CSUC upsetting CSUDH after the Toros took both regular season contests.

The Seawolves connected on a pair of 3-pointers to start the game, increasing their edge to double figures at 16-6 on another triple, this time by Mike Nelson at the 11:11 mark of the first half.

A Zareh Zargaryan bucket and two free throws by Bias cut CSUDH's deficit to 18-12 a minute and a half later, but that proved the be the closest the Toros would get the entire night as SSU used a 17-13 run to close the half and enter the locker room up 35-25.

Sonoma State continued its assault after the break as its lead jumped to 19 on a Ben Washington lay-up with just under five minutes elapsed in the second half, before reaching the 21-point mark five minutes later on a Matthew French bucket.

A James Sandoval basket with 3:38 left in regulation gave SSU the first of two 28-point leads, before six-straight points by Bias brought the Toros to within 22 at 73-51 with 39 seconds left, and a Van Girard II lay-up at the buzzer accounted for the final tally.

The Toros shot a respectable 40% from the field, but just 26.7% from long range and 50% from the charity stripe in suffering their worst loss of this year, and the first 20-point defeat since Dixie State walloped CSUDH on November 21, 2009.

The CSUDH starters were virtually a non-factor after totaling 22 points, with two starters going a combined 0-for-9.

The Toros, now 20-6, 16-6 CCAA, will host a first round CCAA Championship Tournament contest on Tuesday against Chico State for the second year in a row after sweeping the regular season series, looking to avenge last year's first round  loss after also taking both contests during the regular season.

The game will be televised live on the Toro Sports Network via internet TV on www.GoToros.com/live.
