Toros Fall in Extras Again to Cal Poly Pomona, 5-4

Box Score
POMONA -- It was a case of deja vu all over again as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team dropped an extra-inning contest at Cal Poly Pomona, this time by a 5-4 count, running its losing streak to eight.  Senior Abel Medina (pictured) had a good day at the plate, gathering three hits and cashing in two RBIs.

Much the same as yesterday the Toros started quickly with two straight singles that were cashed in on a Medina baseknock and groundout by Jonathan Keener.  The Toros, now 4-9, 0-6 CCAA, gathered a hit in each of the next three innings but could not push a run across.;

Toro starter Josh Corrales, meanwhile, was throwing a no-hitter through five innings, which included a short rain delay in the bottom of the fourth.

CSUDH loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth, scoring only one run to push the lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Leyva. The 3-0 and no-hitter evaporated with one out in the sixth as an error, two wild pitches and two-run double helped CPP tied up the score at three a piece after six innings.

With momentum in CPP's corner, it took senior Kevin Pillar all of one pitch to take it back, tripling down the right field line, eventually scoring the tie-breaking run on a Medina RBI single.

Cal Poly Pomona, however, tied the game at four in the bottom of the frame, and would have had more except for Oscar Soriano gunning down the would-be go-ahead run at the plate after trying to score on a sacrifice fly.

For the second day in a row the Toros and Broncos headed to extra innings despite CSUDH holding a commanding 12-4 advantage in hits.  In the bottom of the tenth, CPP led off the inning with a double, put another runner on base on an error and scored the winning run on a single through the left side.

For the game Leyva, Pillar and Drew Rodela each had two hits and a run to their credit.  Starter Corrales went eight innings of four-hit baseball, allowing three earned runs and striking out six Broncos.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will round out their four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow with a doubleheader on Toro Field, starting at 11:00am.
Both games will be nationally broadcast live via Internet radio on the Toro Sports Network online at www.GoToros.com/Live.
