No. 15 Toros Fall at No. 3 Humboldt State, 71-62

Box Score
ARCATA -- Before an announced crowd of 1,850, No. 15-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills fell in its quest to sweep the regular season series from its northern California rival as No. 3-ranked Humboldt State clinched the CCAA regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming league tournament with a hard-fought 71-62 win over the Toros.  Guard Marcquintice Davis led the Toros with 20 points in the loss.

The first half proved to be the Toros' undoing after falling behind by as much as 11 in the opening stanza.  After Davis scored four of the first six points of the game, the aggressive Lumberjacks began to attack the rim, and were rewarded with a decisive eight more attempts and nine more makes than the Toros at the charity stripe, staking them to their first lead at 10-9 after a pair of Brian Morris makes.

A triple by Brandon Sperling, who finished with a game-high 23 points, extended HSU's lead to four at 13-9, and was part of a 15-2 run that brought the 'Jack advantage to 17-8 on another pair of Morris freebies.

After another Sperling 3-pointer gave HSU an 11-point edge at 22-11, CSUDH went on 10-2 run to get within two on a pair of James Cawthorne free throws, only to see the Jacks close the half with four-straight points to take a 35-26 halftime lead.

HSU kept its lead around double figures to start the second half, before a Cornell Jenkins triple led a Toro spurt that closed their deficit to just six at 55-49 with 7:42 left in regulation.

A pair of free throws, a bucket and 3-pointer on back-to-back-to-back possessions by the 'Jacks again pushed HSU's lead to 13, around where it remained the rest of the half.

A Davis bucket that cut the score to 67-60 with 2:01 left looked to give the Toros a window, but a Toro turnover and four-consecutive HSU free throws down the stretch sealed the game for the hosts in the eventual 71-62 clincher.

Cawthorne added 15 on 4-of-6 shooting from the field while Cornell Jenkins added 10 in the loss, while Randy Hunter and Morris' 13 points each aided in the HSU win.

HSU reversed the rebounding role with a 3-rebound edge, an 11-board turnaround from the two teams' first meeting in which CSUDH grabbed eight more than their guests.

The big story came at the foul line as the 'Jacks earned 10 more attempts that led to 10 more makes in the nine-point win.

The Toros, now 20-5, 16-5 CCAA, conclude their regular season Fridy night in Rohnert Park against Sonoma State, before the first round of the CCAA Championship Tournament commences on Tuesday, March 1, with CSUDH hosting a first-round contest against an opponent to be determined.
