Toros Grand Slammed by Seawolves in a 13-6 Loss

Box Score
CARSON -- For the second day in a row the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros could not overcome Sonoma State's offense, this time falling 13-6 after a five-run 4th highlighted by a grand slam hit over the left field scoreboard staked SSU to an insurmountable 8-0 lead.  Junior Matt Akiyama led the team with his two RBIs and two walks.

Sonoma State (8-0, 3-0 CCAA) grabbed a 3-0 after two innings thanks to three hits, three walks and an error by CSUDH starter Sean Wardour.  Things turned for the worst in the top of the fourth as four of the first five batters reached base, scoring one while loading them for SSU first baseman O'Koyea Dickson.  On the first pitch from new pitcher Danny Torres, Dickson blasted one of the longest home runs in Toro Field history, a grand slam over the scoreboard in left center field.

CSUDH stormed back for five runs in bottom half of the inning as seven straight batters reached base leading to five runs on five hits to trim the deficit down to 8-5.  Akiyama had a key 2-RBI single during the rally which was started by a Kevin Pillar double.

However, in the top of the sixth Sonoma State nixed any thoughts of a comeback as they scored four runs thanks to the first five batters reaching base.  Each team added one run in the ninth to bring the final score to 13-6 in favor of SSU.

For the game, CSUDH left on nine runners while SSU had four extra base hits compared to only two by the Toros.  Senior Michael Cruz did well in his 3.1 innings of work, allowing only two hits and a run.  Pillar, Abel Medina, and Drew Rodela each had two hits on the afternoon.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (4-6, 0-3 CCAA) will return to Toro Field Sunday at 11:00am to close out the series against Sonoma State.
