Toros Baseball Drops Two against Sonoma State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- After a pair of three-run comebacks still led to a 9-7 loss in game one, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros were looking to knot the series at one against the Sonoma State University Seawolves in game two Friday afternoon. However the Seawolf pitching limited the Toros bats while using two four-run innings to take game two 9-2. Junior first baseman Drew Rodela had a solid day, driving in three on two hits while scoring a run.

In game one, CSUDH fell behind early after single runs by SSU in the top of the fourth and fifth, including a no-doubt solo homer by O'Koyea Dickson in the top of the fifth.

CSUDH cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of singles and an error.  Sonoma State used a pair of doubles to build the lead to three in the top of the sixth before CS Dominguez Hills mounted a comeback.

With the top of the lineup to start the bottom of the sixth, Carlos Leyva singled and stole second.  Following a groundout and a walk, Leyva scored on a close play at home bring the game to 4-2.  Sonoma pitchers combined to walk the next three batters allowing CSUDH to tie the game at four.  However the rally ended with one out and the bases loaded on a failed squeeze attempt that led to two runners being called out at third.

With momentum back on their side, the Seawolves bounced back for a three run 7th inning, only to see the Toros bounce back themselves with three runs, with two coming on Abel Medina and Rodela RBI singles.

The final runs of game one came on a two-run double by the Seawolves to get to the final score of 9-7. Jose Serrano did strike out the side in the top of the ninth for the Toros.

Game two began much like game one as the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead thanks to a run in the top of the second.  CSUDH starter Josh Corrales stranded the bases loaded in the third though his pitch count rose quickly as the game progressed.  The wildness allowed SSU to take over the game in the top of the fourth.

Corrales was pulled with one out in the top of the fourth after giving up four runs on two hits and walking five batters.  The Toros did get out of the inning without any more damage, although they trailed 5-0. CSUDH added a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to shrink the gap to 5-2 after five innings.

Any thoughts of a comeback ended in the top of the sixth, however, as Sonoma State scored four runs to close the scoring in their 9-2 win.

The two teams are back at it tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11:00 am on Toro Field.
