Cox Takes Heart Out of San Francisco State, 72-68

Box Score
CARSON -- Senior Michael Cox took 15th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills on his shoulders against visiting San Francisco State tonight, and the result was a workmanlike 72-68 win over a talented Gators squad that boasted two scorers with at least 20 points.  With the win, the Toros kept themselves one game back of league leader Humboldt State, keeping their destiny firmly in their own hands.

By winning out the next two weekends, which includes a showdown at Humboldt State on Wednesday, February 23, CSUDH would clinch the top seed in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament by virtue of sweeping the Jacks after a win on January 22 in Carson.

Additionally, CSUDH clinches a first-round hosting berth for the CCAA Tournament with tonight's victory, which will take place on Tuesday, March 1, at a time to be determined.

Unlike yesterday's contest that saw the Toros fall behind early and often, CSUDH seemingly took control of tonight's game early, staking themselves to a 6-point lead seven minutes into the game, and to a 15-point edge at 24-9 with 7:50 left in the first half.

The Gators, however, coming into tonight two games back of the Toros for second place in the CCAA, stormed back with a 16-1 run to knot the game at 25 all on a Marquel Hoskins triple three minutes later, before two Cox buckets and a 3-pointer by Tim McLaurin gave the hosts a 36-30 lead entering the break.

CSUDH started strong after the break as it pushed its lead to 10 at 51-41 on a pair of Cornell Jenkins free throws with 14:17 left in regulation, only to see the Gators go on an 11-2 to close to within one four minutes later, before Cox answered with a bucket and an old-fashioned 3-point play to give CSUDH breathing room at 58-52.

The Gators, behind the hot 3-point hand of Nefi Perdomo who sank 4-of-7 after the break, made one final run in getting within 68-66 with 32 seconds left in the game, but Cox and Robert Willhite combined to sink four-consecutive free throws to seal the hard-fought win.

Cox's 30 points, on 9-of-13 shooting from the field including 12-of-13 from the foul line, was seven points short of the CSUDH all-time record set by Emanuel Brown on January 15, 2000, against Sonoma State, and the first time a Toro hit the 30-point mark since Tim McGrath dropped 30 on Cal State East Bay on January 2, 2010.

Zareh Zargaryan chipped in 9 points while three others finished with 7 for the Toros, who again dominated on the boards, this time by a 31-to-18 count.

Hoskins led the Gators with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, with Nefi Perdomo added 20 in the loss for SFSU, which fell to 14-8, 12-6 CCAA.

The Toros, now 19-3, 15-3 CCAA, host UC San Diego and Cal State East Bay next weekend for their final homestand of the regular season, with Saturday's contest honoring six seniors on "Senior Day," as well as commemorating "Think Pink" night.
Both games will be nationally televised live on the Toro Sports Network online at www.GoToros.com/live.
