No. 20 Toros Walk-Off in 8-6 Thriller Over Western Oregon

Box Score
CARSON -- Senior Carlos Leyva showed the experience and discipline that come with being an All-American as he set off a huge celebration with a 2-out, 3-run walk off home run to
give the Toros an 8-6 win over visiting Western Oregon after the Wolves had taken a one-run lead with a 3-run ninth.

With the dramatic finish, CSUDH improves to 4-1 on the year after taking the first two of a four-game west region set against the Wolves, who fell to 1-5.

CSUDH scored first in the bottom of the first on a two-out single by Jonathan Keener, scoring Leyva, who led the inning off with a single.  The Toros added two more in the bottom of the third when the top of the lineup smacked three straight hits.  Leyva singled, Kevin Pillar doubled and Abel Medina drove them both in with a bloop single down the left field line.  The lead would grow to 4-0 on an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth.

WOU struggled to drive in the runners as through the first five innings they stranded all eight of their runners. The Wolves would finally get to starter Josh Corrales in the top of the sixth to cut the lead in half to 4-2 thanks to a walk and a double to lead off the inning.  Fellow junior Derrick Dingeman would come in with one out in the sixth and hold WOU scoreless over the next two and two-thirds before struggling to record an out to begin the ninth.

Dingeman would load the bases to start the top of the ninth on a hit and two hit batters. Andrew Klausmeier then entered with the bases jacked and proceeded to throw six straight balls, walking in a run. Head coach Murphy Su'a would pull Klausmeier in favor of senior Danny Torres, off whom the Wolves scored thrice, with the last coming on a two-out error.

Down one going into the bottom of the ninth, CSUDH put runners on first and second with two out before Leyva came to bat. On a 2-1 count, Leyva hit his second walk-off of the season, this time a shot that cleared the right field fence to set off the celebration.

On the afternoon Western Oregon starter Mike Ward threw eight innings after settling down from his early struggles.  Pillar and Medina would have two hits each with Pillar scoring two runs while Medina drove in two.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will finish off the four-game series with a doubleheader Friday against Western Oregon on Toro Field, with the first pitch set for 11:00am.
