Toros Survive Barnburner in 77-73 Win at CS East Bay

HAYWARD -- Newcomers Wayne Andrews (pictured) and Myron Green shared team-high honors with 18 points apiece as Cal State Dominguez Hills withstood a furious Pioneer 3-point barrage at the end of regulation and took a hard-fought 77-73 win in Pioneer Gym.

With the win, CSUDH events its record at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in league play.

After forging five ties over the first 12:50 of play, the last coming at 23-23, the
Toros used a 15-4 run over the next six minutes of play to take control of the period thanks to 10 points by Robert Willhite and nine by Andrews, before the hosts used a triple by Jason Smith and a bucket by Roshu Wynne to cut CSUEB's deficit to just 38-32 entering the half.

The Toros continued to assert themselves offensively after the break, increasing their lead to eight at 46-38 on an Everett Brown downtown bomb at the 17:25 mark, before an Andrews bucket seven minutes later brought CSUDH's edge to 58-49 with 10:47 left in regulation.

The Pioneers, however, connected for four of their 10 made 3-pointers in the second half, eventually taking the lead at 63-62 on a Quinton Lilley layup at the 6:14 mark.

CSUDH would answer with an 11-5 run over the next five plus minutes, and connected on four of its final six free throws to ice the game, rendering CSUEB's two triples in the final minutes futile.

Green led the charge at the foul line as he connected for 12-of-14, with Willhite's 6-for-6 and Andrews' 5-for-5 efforts aiding the cause.

For the game, CSUDH drained 81.1% of its foul shots, with nine more makes than the hosts in the assertive win.

Wynne led all scorers with 19 points and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, but the Toros used a decisive 44-to-28 rebounding edge to offset six more turnovers than the Pioneers.

CSUDH will look to run its win streak to three games tomorrow night in Seaside, as CS Monterey Bay hosts the Toros for a 7:30 pm tipoff in the Kelp Bed.
