Hughes Sets Career Rebound High in 60-41 Loss to Hawai'i Pacific at Disney Classic

ANAHEIM -- Senior Sherrie Hughes pulled down a career-best 15 boards and added seven points, but the Toros shot just 20.3% from the field in suffering a 60-41 loss to Hawai'i Pacific on day two of the Disney Division II Tip Off Classic.

Hawai'i Pacific scored the game's first 13 points until a Nikki Boutte triple got the Toros on the board with 13:42 left in the first half.

HPU increased its lead to 15 on two occasions before CSUDH whittled the lead to single digits, again on a Boutte 3-pointer with just under 4 minutes left in the half before the Sea Warriors entered the locker room up 30-20 at the half.

After the break, Hughes got the Toros to within 34-26 on a free throw with five minutes elapsed in the second period.

HPU, however, replied with a 14-5 run over the next six minutes, capped by a Mikela Thoemmes bucket for a 50-33 lead.

That's where HPU's lead hovered the remained of the game, before a Syke Savini triple with 24 ticks left on the clock put the icing on the Sea Warrior win.

Of Hughes' 15 boards, 12 came on the offensive boards as CSUDH out-rebounded HPU 50-45 for the game.

Mana Hopkins led all scorers with 20 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field, with Savini chipping in 12 points in the win.

Boutte connected for 2 of CSUDH's 3 triples made on the night, as CSUDH fell to 0-2 on the year.

The Toros conclude the Tip Off Classic tomorrow afternoon against Saint Martin's, with first tip set for 1:30 pm in the Anaheim Convention Center.
