Toros Volleyball Defeated by Otters in Three

The Toros donned CCAA-sponsored "Dig For A Cure" t-shirts during warm-ups

CARSON -- In their final match of a three weekend homestand, the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills faced a familiar foe in the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters on "Dig For A Cure" night, raising awareness for breast cancer.  The familiarity did not change the outcome from their first match, however, with the Otters winning Saturday night in three closely contested sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-21).  Freshman Azieanna Smith recorded her first collegiate double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.

The visiting CSUMB squad jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead and maintained a good lead until their first set point at 24-18.  That is when the Toros appeared to rally by defending five straight set points to bring the score to 24-23.  However, the sixth time proved to be the charm as the Otters took set one 25-23 on the next point.  Sophomore Elizabeth Krieger had a good set with six kills at a .357 clip to go along with a block assist.

Just like in the first set the Otters jumped out to a 10-5 cushion.  But unlike the first set, CSUMB kept its foot to the pedal and took the set 25-16.  Twelve errors hurt the Toros the most compared to just four by CSUMB as Smith killed a team-high four balls while also having three digs in the set.

Set three was the most closely contested of the match with the Toros taking a one point lead as late as 16-15.  CSUMB responded by taking six straight points and looked to seize the game.  CSUDH scored four straight to bring the score to 21-20 before the Otters scored four of the final five points to win the set and match 25-21.  Smith finished the set with five kills.

For the match the Toros were outhit .264 to .204, but the difference proved in errors as CSUDH committed seven more than the visitors.  Krieger led the team with 12 kills while junior Rose Greco had a career-high 19 digs on the evening.  Junior Delea Pursel had three blocks while sophomore Abbey Prusa had seven kills.

Before and during the match, CSUDH did its part to raise awareness for breast cancer by raffling off "Think Pink" items, with all proceeds going towards the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  In addition to t-shirts, two grand prize winners received a pink camping chair, a pink cooler, a pink cap and a CSUDH Think Pink decal among the notable items, making tonight's contest that much more memorable.

After the contest, the CSUDH volleyball team gave one of the honorary pink game balls to Dr. Sue Borrego, CSUDH's VP Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, for her support and commitment to the volleyball team and to Toros Athletics.

The Toros will return to the road for one weekend, beginning next Thursday, October 20 against Cal State San Bernardino in San Bernardino.  The match is set to begin at 7:00pm.
