No. 10 Toros Make History in 79-70 Win at CS Monterey Bay

Box Score
SEASIDE -- Tenth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills made history tonight with its 79-70 win over host Cal State Monterey Bay as the Toros improved to 11-1, 7-1 CCAA, marking the best start over a 12-game stretch in the program's history.  Seniors Marcquintice Davis and James Cawthorne (pictured) shared team-high honors with 13 points apiece as CSUDH remained tied atop the league standings.

After an Otter bucket gave the hosts a 2-0 lead to begin the evening, CSUDH exerted its will to take a 10-5 lead on a Cawthorne lay-up at 17:27, and to 21-9 on a triple by Tim McLaurin five minutes later.

CSUDH's lead hovered at the double-figure mark, reaching as high as 15 at 40-25 on a pair of Cawthorne freebies, before settling for a 40-27 cushion entering the half.

A triple by Rashad Bias to open the second half got the Toros out started fast as CSUDH's lead reached 19 points twice, the last on a pair of Robert Willhite free throws that gave the Toros a 53-34 lead with 16:11 left in regulation.

The Otters, however, slowly whittled away their upstream battle after out-scoring the Toros 9-0 to cut the score to 53-43, only to see the visitors again stretch their lead to a comfortable 14 points, before CSUMB made its last run of the game.

In that spurt, the Otters cut the lead to just five at 70-65 on a Derrick Anderson jumper, but the Toro free throw shooters held firm as CSUDH drained 7 of its 8 final free throws to put the game out of reach.

The Toros connected for 72.7% from the charity stripe, led by Cawthorne's perfect 4-for-4 effort, while shooting 49.1% from the field and 50% from 3-point land.

Willhite and Cornell Jenkins each chipped in with 12 points, while Amir Aguilar contributed 10 in the balanced win.

CSUDH will continue its CCAA road schedule next Thursday at Cal State East Bay, with first tip set for 7:30 pm.
