Second-Half Defensive Lockdown Propels No. 10 Toros Past Gators, 73-55

Box Score
SAN FRANCISCO -- A balanced attack and defensive dominance after the break turned a two-point halftime lead into a 73-55 blowout win over host San Francisco State as the No. 10-ranked Toros matched the best start in program history in improving to 10-1 on the year.  Senior point guard Marcquintice Davis led all scorers with 19 points in the win.

The visitors stormed to a 12-6 lead with four minutes elapsed, pushing it to 12 at 18-6 on a pair of Zareh Zargaryan freebies and a lay-in by Davis at the 9:11 mark of the first half.  Another Davis bucket, this time a triple, again gave CSUDH an 11-point lead at 21-10, only to have the hosts go on a 14-0 run to take the lead at 24-21 on a Nefi Perdomo 3-pointer with just 4:21 left in the half.

SFSU kept its slim edge over the next few minutes, until a James Cawthorne follow-up and Robert Willhite lay-up accounted for the final scoring of the half, and a 33-32 Toro lead.

The two teams remained close after the break, tying for the fifth time at 38-all with 17:05 left in regulation, until an 8-0 run gave CSUDH the lead for good.  An 11-0 run followed to put the game away, courtesy of three 3-pointers in a four-possession span that gave the Toros a 57-45 advantage.

The Toros sizzled from 3-point land after the break, hitting 7-of 10 en route to a 57.9% success rate from behind the arc for the game, while their opponents went ice cold from long range, misfiring on all eight attempts while making just 10-of-33 shots from the floor.

Davis added 4 assists to his statline while Cornell Jenkins pitched in 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line.

Willhite collected a career-best 13 boards and was just a point away from a double-double, while Zargaryan's 8 points, 8 boards and 6 assists left him flirting with a prestigious triple-double.

Shooting 49.1% for the game, seven players tallied at least eight points for the victors as CSUDH registered a commanding 47-30 edge on the boards, and saw its bench outplay SFSU with 21 points compared to 14, including a 16-6 edge after intermission.

SFSU boasted three players with 11 points apiece in falling to 7-4, 5-2 CCAA.

The Toros, now 10-1, 6-1 CCAA and tied for first place in league play, will look to take another historical step tomorrow at CS Monterey Bay, which fell 69-62 to Cal State L.A. earlier this evening.
