Warriors Play Up to Namesake in 62-55 Upset Win Over No. 4 Toros

Box Score
TURLOCK -- Fourth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills saw its program-best 10-game win streak come to a screeching halt tonight as host Cal State Stanislaus avenged an earlier season defeat in a huge 62-55 upset win over the Toros, knocking them back into a first place tie atop the CCAA.  Senior Marcquintice Davis led the Toros with 14 points while junior Robert Willhite (pictured) added 11 including a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

The last time the Toros were on the wrong end of the score came on December 4, in a 59-49 loss at home to CS San Bernardino.

Like many of their games this season, the Toros jumped out to a quick start, this time at 7-0 on a pair of Willhite triples and a made foul shot by Tim McLaurin.  The Warriors, however, answered with their own 6-0 run to get back into the game, and took their first lead of the game at 12-9 on a Dan Daviess lay-up.

CSUS built its advantage to double digits at 23-13 on a pair of Dwight Jones free throws, two of 11 he made in his aggressive first half, before taking a 35-22 edge into the locker room.

The Toros came out of the break on an identical 7-0 run, only to see the Warriors answer with a 5-0 run to again gather itself some breathing room.  Building another double-figure lead at the 7:53 mark on an Evan Scott 3-pointer to give CSUS a 49-38 lead, a Van Girard II long-range make and four-consecutive free throws brought CSUDH to within 49-45 with 5:47 left in regulation, setting the stage for a fantastic finish.

Unfortunately for CSUDH, the hosts executed better over the final minutes of the contest, outscoring the Toros 13-10 over that stretch to take the upset win.

Neither team shot over 38% from the field or 30% from long range as a combined 43 personal and two technical fouls, both called on the Toros, contributed to 45 points coming from the free throw line.

Jones finished with a game-high 15 points, with 13 coming from the foul line, with Reggie Jones adding 11 as the Warriors improved to 8-10, 6-8 CCAA after their biggest win of the season.

The Toros, who fell to 16-2, 12-2 CCAA, continue league action on the road next weekend, taking on perennial power CS San Bernardino and defending NCAA National Champion Cal Poly Pomona one night later.
