No. 5 Toros Stand Alone Atop CCAA After 76-59 Win Over No. 20 Humboldt State

Box Score
CARSON -- It was just a regular season game on paper, but with visiting and 20th-ranked Humboldt State tied atop the league standings with host and fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills entering tonight's showdown, the Toros left no doubt as to which team was the better one tonight after taking a 76-59 win over the Lumberjacks in a playoff like atmosphere, taking sole possession of first place in the CCAA.

Senior Zareh Zargaryan led all scorers with 19 points while fellow senior Michael Cox (pictured) notched the team's lone double-double in the win, tallying 14 points and 10 boards.

The game was high energy from the opening tip as a 6-0 Toros run was answered by an 8-0 spurt by Humboldt State, capped by a Randy Hunter 3-pointer at the 14:41 mark.

Tied at 12 three minutes later, CSUDH went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes, with the biggest asset being HSU scoring leader Brian Morris picking up his second foul at the 9:24 mark, sending him to the Lumberjack bench the rest of the half.

Looking to pull away, the Toros wound up getting caught by a resilient 'Jack squad, with a DJ Broome jumper giving HSU a 23-22 lead with 4:10 left in the first half.  CSUDH, however, answered again with a 7-0 run to take a 29-26 lead entering the break.

Junior Robert Willhite started CSUDH off on the right foot after intermission, hitting
consecutive 3-pointers to begin the second-half shooting exhibition for the Toros en route to the team connecting for 5-of-8 from long range.

Again looking to put the game away, the Toros suffered a blow when leading scorer Michael Cox picked up his third foul at the 17:09 mark, only to receive a reprieve when Morris was assessed his second technical foul of the game after a flagrant foul elbow to James Cawthorne connected at the 15:36 mark, sending Morris to the locker room.

The Toros offense took it from there, connecting on 17-of-23 shots in the second half, a sizzling 73.9% clip that led to their 54.9% shooting for the game.

Zargaryan led all scorers with his 19 points, chipping in seven boards and five assists in the huge win.  Willhite added 16, while Marcquintice Davis added 13 points, five assists and three boards to round out the double-figure Toro scorers.

Hunter led the Jacks with 16 points and 10 rebounds, with Morris being held to just 6 points on the evening, well below his 19.5 ppg average entering the weekend as HSU fell to 14-2, 10-2 CCAA.

Tying the program record with their ninth-straight win to match streaks set by the 1988-89 and 1990-91 teams, t
he 15-1, 11-1 CCAA Toros take to the road for consecutive weekends to kick off the second half of league play, beginning with a January 28 date at Chico State.
