No. 5 Toros Roll in 84-72 Victory Over Sonoma State

Box Score
CARSON -- In the "game before the game," fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills kept its focus on the "now" in an 84-72 win over visiting Sonoma State, setting up a showdown with co-league leader and 20th-ranked Humboldt State tomorrow night after the Lumberjacks took down Cal State L.A. 57-51 earlier tonight.  Seniors Marcquintice Davis and Zareh Zargaryan led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points apiece to lead a quintet of Toros in double-figure scoring.

Balance and a decisive edge on the boards again favored the Toros as five finished with at least 12 points on the evening, with CSUDH notching a dominating 40-20 rebounding advantage that led to an 18-7 edge in 2nd-chance points.

Senior James Cawthorne was the biggest beneficiary of that final stat as he pulled down nine boards, including six on the offensive end that led to his 4-of-6 night and 7-for-7 from the charity stripe en route to a near double-double with 15 points.

The Toros turned an early 5-2 deficit into 19-9 lead with nearly 10 minutes elapsed in the opening stanza led by 11 points from Tim McLaurin and nine by Cawthorne.

Sonoma State, however, cut the lead to 32-31 on a Ben Washington foul shot before a McLaurin triple with 1:22 left in the first half gave CSUDH a 35-31 lead entering the break.

CSUDH opened with a 13-2 run four minutes into the second half, ballooning its lead to 19 twice before SSU began connecting from downtown.

Nailing eight of 18 three-pointers taken after the break, the Seawolves cut their deficit to as little as eight at 74-66 on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Washington, only to have Davis take over in the final two minutes of play, draining a three and hitting 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the 84-72 Toro win, and send SSU to a 5-10, 3-8 CCAA record.

The Toros shot 50% from the field and 73.9% from the free throw line after a first half that saw CSUDH sink all nine of its attempts.

SSU, meanwhile, connected for 42.9% of its shots from the floor including 12-of-28 from long range, and was nearly perfect from the line after missing just two of its 20 attempts.

Seawolf Washington led all scorers with 19 points while McLaurin's 14 and Michael Cox's 12 rounded out the five double-figure scorers for the Toros.

With the first NCAA West Region poll of the year to be announced on Wednesday, the Toros, now 14-1, 10-1 CCAA, hook up with Humboldt State tomorrow at 7:30 pm with not only sole possession of first place in the CCAA on the line, but also a possible top seed in the west region.  The showdown can be seen live on internet TV at www.GoToros.com/live.
