Toros Capture Second Win of the Season in 49-42 Decision at CS East Bay

HAYWARD -- Thanks to a smothering defense, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros won their second game of the season in a 49-42 victory over Cal State East Bay to keep the Pioneers winless. The victory marked CSUDH's second CCAA win in their last three tries, both coming on the road. Junior guard Nikki Boutte' scored a game-high 18 points to go along with five boards and two assists.

Defense was the key for both sides in the first half as neither team was able to shoot better than 38%. The Pioneers scored the first three points but with the score tied at five, the Toros would take the lead from there and never surrender it.  CSUDH's defense was sensational, holding the Pioneers to only 6-of-28 from the field (21.4%). Boutte' led the Toros with eight points and two assists in the first half.

Both teams started out slow as the teams combined for only nine points in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Toros lead grew to 14 points at 38-24 on a 3-pointer from Krissi Sylvis with 7:16 left. From there the Pioneers would never get to within more than seven points as CSU East Bay would go 2-of-8 from the field down the stretch.

For the game the Toros shot 34.8% from the field compared to only 26.8% for the Pioneers. Great CSU Dominguez Hills defense held CSUEB to only 2-of-17 (11.8%) from behind the arc.

Junior post Ashley Hudson added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench while junior Sherrie Hughes had a team-high seven rebounds.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will return to action on the road against west region powerhouse UC San Diego in La Jolla at 5:30pm on Saturday, January 15.
