DeVine Notches Name in Toro Record Book Despite Warriors Taking 3-2 Win

CARSON -- Despite outplaying the visiting Warriors in nearly every offensive category, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team fell victim to errors and time as the Toros fell in their CCAA home opener, 3-2.  With 26 kills on the night, however, Denise DeVine placed her name in a five-way tie for the No. 4 most kills in a match in CSUDH history.

Another Toro, Cassidy Mangum, added a career best with 51 assists, besting her previous match total of 47 sets on the table.

Two other Toros landed double-digit kills as Abbey Prusa notched 14 while Elaine Hicks came in with 13.

Libero Hilary Hougardy handled more than enough of her share of defensive duties, grabbing 21 digs on the night.

Grabbing wins in the first and third sets, the Toros were on fire as an offensive threat, posting a respective .267 and .125 attack percentages in the wins with a .214 in their first set loss.

The first games saw the lead change hands six times, while the Toros relinquished it only once in their second win highlighted by an eight-point streak, their biggest on the night.

The Toros forced three sets into extra play, the largest being the first with the win coming way of a 29-27 score.

Fans were treated to many theatrics on the night including a volley in set three that saw the ball change hands 22 times, adding to the 202 total attacks for the Toros, 72 coming way of DeVine, No. 2 on the Toros' single-match charts.

In the end the Warriors' strong presence at the net gave them the win as 14.0 team blocks led by Kaycee Gow's 11 provided a nearly impenetrable CSUS defense.

The Toros also put up an effort up front, with both Prusa and Hicks grabbing four blocks apiece for a team total of 6.0.

The Toros (0-6, 0-1 CCAA) will continue the homestand tomorrow as they take on the Wildcats of Chico State (4-2, 0-1 CCAA) with first serve set for 7:00pm.  Fans can watch the game with live television on the Toro Sports Network here.
