Women's Basketball Adds Six to Strong 2010-11 Recruiting Class

CARSON -- After a dismal first-round loss in the 2010 CCAA Basketball Championships that followed a 2009 Championship Tournament title, Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball head coach Van Girard has announced the signing of six recruits to bring wins back to the Carson campus just in time for the 2010-11 season.

With only five letterwinners and three redshirts returning form the 2009-10 campaign, Girard went on a mission to bring the talent back to CSUDH and landed two guards and four wing players  to make up one of his strongest recruiting classes yet.

Making up the class is two freshman guards, Ariana Caffey and Hillary Perrin-Grant from a respective Diamond Ranch High School and Fairfield High School.

Arianna Caffey
At 5-foot-6 and hailing from Pomona, Caffey led her team in assists her senior year while also making a strong contribution on the scoring front.

"Arianna is a solid point guard with great floor vision," says Girard.  "Her basketball IQ also helps her immensely in her position."

Perrin-Grant also rings in at 5-foot-6 and will perform as a "lightning quick guard who can play either guard position while also contributing solid defense and court vision," boasts Girard.

The first wing addition is Ella Rodriguez, a 5-foot-9 freshman from Walnut High School.  Leading her team to a perfect 8-0 mark in the San Antonio League as a senior, Rodriguez was second on the team in scoring as well.

Ella Rodriguez
"Ella is an all around player who can really do a little bit of everything," Girard says.  "Her overall skills mixed with her basketball IQ allow for her to help us at multiple positions immediately."

The final additions all come into the wing position as transfer juniors, Ashley Hudson from Diablo Valley Junior College, Tiffany Smith from Mt. San Jacinto Junior College, and Brittani Hulsizer from Antelope Valley College.

Also looking to see time at the post position, Hudson is a 5-foot-11 transfer who "is a great scorer and really has a knack for putting the ball in the basket," Girard says.  "She can score in a variety of ways, which will be beneficial to the team."

As a second-team All-State Selection in her sophomore year, Smith rings in at 5-foot-11.

"Tiffany is a phenomenal athlete who's length will prove invaluable at this level," says Girard.  "As one of the top scorers in the state for the JC ranks, it is evident that she will find ways to score as well."

The final addition, Hulsizer comes in at 5-foot-10 and was a First-Team All-Foothill League selection after leading her team to back-to-back conference titles.

"Brittani's ability to score will help us out immediately, but her most valuable asset is the emphasis she puts on the team," Girard says.  "Her ability to defend, rebound, and make all of the little plays to help this team win have the staff very excited about her arrival."

It isn't all about the players as Girard is also excited about a recent addition to his coaching staff.  Joining the ranks as the top assistant will be Brent Stephens, who will put his 11 years of coaching to use at the NCAA Division II level.

"Brent's real, true knowledge of the game and hard-work ethic plus enthusiasm will add much to the program in the coming years," says Girard.
