STOCKTON -- For the second time in their programs history the No. 25 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will see action in the title game of the CCAA Championship Tournament, after suffering an 8-4 loss at the hands of the No. 1 Tritons of UC San Diego, the Toros remained alive after taking a 8-4 decision over the No. 29 Wildcats of Chico State.
The Toros last saw action in the penultimate game in 2006 when they suffered a 10-4 loss to Chico State, giving sweet justice to tonight's win.
Though leaving the field with a good taste in their mouth the Toros will look to tomorrow to break a seven-game loss streak to the Tritons, a streak that stretches back to 2009.
In game one, facing Matt Rossman on the hill, the CCAA's Pitcher of the Year, the Toros produced well, pelting him with six hits and handing him all of their four runs earned.
With the Tritons grabbing an early three in the first and one more in the second, the Hills came alive in the bottom of that frame, producing three runs on a Kevin Pillar lead-off double, a Dean Benavidez RBI-double and an Andrew Baslow sacrifice fly.
With both teams going scoreless for nearly the remainder of the game the Tritons were able to pull out the win in a powerhouse eighth inning, grabbing four runs on three hits.
Starting in game one action, Kody Kurowski hurled eight straight, scattering the same number of hits and fanning three batters in the loss.
The Toros got ahead early in game two and kept it there, grabbing five runs in the third off of back-to-back doubles from Baslow and Carlos Leyva.
With the 'Cats grabbing three frames of scoring, none of it was enough with the Toros' starter Shane Youngdale throwing his first complete-game of the season in a six strike out, eight hit effort.
Turning two double-dips in the nightcap the Toros now stand with 62 double-plays on the season, the new CSUDH single-season team record.
Adding even more significance to the win, the Toros grabbed their 39th win today, the second most number of wins in a season for the program.
Going 4-of-9 on the day with three doubles, Pillar added two more baseknocks to his collection, extending his D-II record-setting hit-streak to 53 games.
Now 39-17 overall the Toros will put it all on the line tomorrow at 12 noon as they take on the Tritons for the sixth time this season.
