STOCKTON -- CCAA Newcomer of the Year Abel Medina and Andrew Baslow picked a good day to go off at the dish as both registered homers in a combined 7-of-9 effort to pace the Toro offense in a 8-5 win over CSUSB in the opening round of the CCAA Championships on the campus of the University of the Pacific.

The win advances the Toros (38-16) to the winner's bracket where they will face No. 1 UC San Diego after the Tritons dealt the No. 29 Wildcats of Chico State a 8-5 loss.

Second-team All-CCAA selection Bret Montgomery started in action to earn the win after hurling six frames while fanning seven batters and allowing four runs on eight hits.

In relief Andrew Klausmeier grabbed his second save of the season, throwing a full three innings while striking out two.

Medina got things off to a quick start for the Toros, belting both a 2RBI homer and a 2RBI double in only the first two frames, looking more like CCAA MVP than Newcomer of the Year.

With the 'Yotes grabbing four runs through the first six, the Toros broke a 4-4 tie in the the bottom of the inning on run-scoring singles by Dean Benavidez and Baslow for a 6-4 lead.

Baslow later belted a 2RBI long shot in the eighth to close out scoring for the Toros.

Overall the duet of Medina and Baslow led all with Baslow riding a 4-of-5 effort, three runs and RBI apiece, while Medina clocked in with a 3-of-4 effort and 4RBI.

With a single in the third, Kevin Pillar added one more baseknock to his collection, extending his D-II record-setting hit-streak to 52 games.

The Coyotes got a long ball courtesy of Cody Madison for their fourth and final run while Brandon Cunniff fanned three batters and gave up six runs in the loss.

The win improves the Toros to 38-16 on the season and will see them in play in the winner's bracket tomorrow against either No. 1 UC San Diego or No. 29 Chico State, with that game underway now.
