Kevin Pillar Makes NCAA Division II History With 50 Game Hit Streak as Toros Sweep Doubleheader

Game 1  |  Game 2

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team was all cheers as a double off the bat of Kevin Pillar in the second frame of today's nightcap gave junior center fielder a hit in his 50th straight game, now the all-time record in NCAA Division II.  Going 3-of-9 on the day with two doubles, Pillar also guided his team to a 13-6 and 7-5 sweep of the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors.

It all began on February 8th as Pillar went 1-of-3 on the day against Concordia-Irvine, with the only agenda to help guide the Toros to a strong post-season push.

From that day until now, Pillar would hit safely in every game to not only double the former CSUDH record held previously by Jason Klug at 23 games four years ago, but also surpass the NCAA D-II record of 49 games held by Nick Diyorio of Florida Southern in a span between the 2005 and '06 seasons.

Kevin Pillar's Record Setting Double

Aside from today, the most exciting moment for Pillar came on March 18 as he  belted a solo blast over center to tie the CSUDH record before answering back on the 19th with another homer to set the new mark.

In his 50 games Pillar would have 26 games with multiple hits, belt 19 doubles, send eight balls over the fence and bring in 45 RBIs.  The true testament of Pillar's streak is the 79 total hits that define it, a team-high to put Pillar within reach of the Toros' most hits in a season, currently held by Jon Alia with 98 hits in 2009.

Leaving nothing to chance in breaking the record, Pillar nearly saw it all fade away as he reached base in game one in his second-to-last at-bat on an error.  Returning to the dugout Pillar simply said, "I will earn it".  And that he did, following up with a double to tie the mark before his two record setting deuces in game two.

Though the Toros have 10 marks that have made their way into the NCAA D-II record book, Pillar's stands alone as the only Toro record to grab the top position on any list.

For the Toros, the entire day was a success as they pulled off a sweep in 13-6 and 7-5 decisions, guaranteeing them the No. 2 seed in the CCAA Baseball Championships, where they will face Cal State San Bernardino in the first round.

Abel Medina was the star of game one, belting a 3RBI homer in the fifth frame, his only hit of the game, that would bring in the Toros' winning run.

Game two was not without the dramatics in any sense, as Steve Carrillo blasted two over the fence, the second a walk-off bomb as he brought home both himself and Pillar for the game-winner.

Game one starter Kody Kurowski added his eighth win as he fanned five batters in seven innings to improve his record to 8-3.

Nearly hurling a complete-game, Shane Youngdale started on the mound in the second, going 6.2 frames and fanning five batters as well before Matt Phillips would come in to record the winning decision after giving the Warriors their tying run.

The most successful batter on the day, Carlos Leyva went 6-of-9 between the 16 innings, highlighted by a 4-of-4 effort in the nightcap that included a double.

The Toros, now 37-15 and 27-12 in the CCAA, will close out their 2010 regular season tomorrow at noon as they host the Warriors (22-26, 18-21 CCAA) on senior day.
