CARSON -- The visiting Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus ran the show for eight innings before the No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros rallied in the ninth behind a 2RBI long shot from Dean Benavidez to give Cub Scout Troop 240, who supported the Toros from the stands as part of a sports merit badge, a late-game thriller in a 6-5 win.

The visiting Cub Scout Troop 240 of Torrance, who supported the Toros by taking the field during the National Anthem, got the show they were looking for as Benavidez belted his second long shot of the game in the ninth on a 1-0 offering to bring in the Toros' tying run of the game.

Prior to Benavidez's blast, the Toros, despite eight hits in the first six frames, were only able to capitalize on two runs as Kevin Pillar grabbed first on a single before Brian Sturgis, who went 2-of-4 on the day, drove him in two at-bats later in the fourth frame.

Run two came as Benavidez knocked a solo shot in the seventh, his eighth of the season.

The Warriors wasted little time in nearly giving CSUDH no chance, grabbing a run in the first, second, fourth, sixth and seventh frames.

Lead-off Warrior Corey Conflenti led his team, going 2-of-5 with a triple, run and RBI, while Kory Vitato scored two of Stanislaus' five runs.

Just like the immensely shifting winds throughout the day, the momentum did a complete 180 in the ninth as a lead-off Sturgis double, followed by a Barrett Ceverha single and Benavidez homer tied the game before Andrew Baslow would slice a single down the right field line in the game's final at-bat for the walk-off hit.

Starting in action, Bret Montgomery put on a fair showing, fanning five batters in six frames, while giving up four runs on seven hits.

Credited with a no-decision, Montgomery turned the ball over to closer Matt Phillips, who in one full inning stifled two batters, one looking and one swinging, before picking up the win to keep his record perfect at 6-0.

The best hurler on the day, CSUS' starter Andrew Stueve almost worked a complete game after holding the Toros to only two runs on two hits through eight innings before handing over duties to the Warriors relief squad after giving up two more runs in the ninth.

Going 2-of-4 on the day, Pillar looks to make history tomorrow as he now carries a 48-game consecutive hit-streak, one game shy of tying the NCAA Division II record.

With his first long ball in the seventh and second in the ninth, Benavidez now leads the team with nine homers on the season.

The Toros, now 35-15 overall and 25-12 CCAA, will continue the series against the Warriors, 22-24 overall and 18-19 CCAA, tomorrow with a twinbill slated at 12 noon.
