No. 10 Toros Come Up Short Against No. 3 Tritons in 5-2 Loss

Box Score
LA JOLLA -- In what is the most hotly-contested series of the 2010 season, the No. 10 Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team came up short in an opening 5-2 loss to the No. 3 Tritons of UC San Diego as they failed to capitalize on three Triton errors.  Swatting in the only RBI for CSUDH, Abel Medina went 2-of-4 to drive in a run in the first for the Toros.

With only two innings of scoring, the Toros got their first of two in the first as a lead-off single from Carlos Leyva and a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Baslow saw Leyva home safely on Medina's single through the middle.

The Tritons would answer back right in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a walk to score their first run.

The Toros regained the lead in the third as Baslow took first on a freebie before Medina advanced him to third and an error on UCSD would bring him home.

Evan Gregorich brought in two more for the hosts in the third with a 2-RBI double to give the Tritons all the scoring they would need in CUSDH's loss.

Leaving three runners in scoring position going into the ninth, the Toros got their best chance at a comeback as a Steve Carrillo single got him as far as third after pinch-hitter Alan Gatz followed Carrillo with his own single, but UCSD got out of the jam unscathed, leaving two Toros stranded.

Grabbing the win, Tim Shibuya hurled a complete-game with four strikeouts while scattering only eight hits.

Taking the loss, Bret Montgomery added six more Ks to improve his season total to 78, now the eighth-best total on the Toros' all-time strikeout list.

With a single in his first at-bat, Kevin Pillar extended his hit streak to 44 games, five shy of tying the all-time record.

The loss drops the Toros to 34-12 on the season and 24-9 in the CCAA while the Tritons improve to 38-6 and 28-5 in the CCAA.  The series continues as CSUDH hosts UCSD tomorrow with a doubleheader set to start at 12 noon.
