Thirteen Proves Unlucky For No. 13 Toros as Late-Game Rally Not Enough in 5-6 Loss to No. 29 Wildcats

Box Score
CHICO -- The No. 13 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros looked to extend their win streak to 13-straight but were met by the staunch pitching of the No. 29 Wildcats of Chico State as a late-game rally ignited by a Kyle Pond single fell short in a 5-6 loss.

Setting up a game that at this point is an early showcase of the first round of not only the CCAA tournament but NCAA West Region tournament as well both the Toros and Wildcats started off on the mound with their aces.

For CSUDH, Bret Montgomery went for 7.2 innings of action, fanning seven batters before recording the loss after six hits and runs all while holding the 'Cats to two runs through the first seven.

Chico starter Michael Gleason was just as deadly, in 7.1 frames he fanned nine Toros and gave up two runs, one earned on six hits as well before leaving in a tied ballgame to not go on record.

The win goes to Ian Waldron, in one even frame he struck out one and gave up two runs on two hits.

Montgomery's seven Ks put him at 72 on the season, now placing him in a tie for ninth on the Toros' all-time top ten strike outs in a season list.

A straight pitchers duel through the eighth, CSUC broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the frame as two hits, two wild pitches, and a plunked batter would seal the Toros' fate.

Not yet done for the night, the Toros came alive in the ninth with Pond's hit the first of the frame, advancing him to first and Carlos Leyva to second.

After stealing third Leyva would score on a Steve Carrillo RBI-single before Kevin Pillar sent an RBI-single to dead center to score Pond with Carrillo scoring on a failed Pillar pick-off attempt, the Toros' last say on the night.

By far the most disciplined Toro batter of the night, Kevin Logan went three-of-three with a triple and 2RBI, bringing in a run for the Toros in both the sixth and eighth to keep them alive.

Going two-of-four on the day, Pillar extended his game hit-streak to 40-straight and is one game shy of tying the all-time No. 3 hit streak record in all of NCAA Division II, set by Jason Jones of Kennesaw State in 1999 at 41 games.

The Toros, now 31-11 overall and 21-8 in the CCAA will resume action against the 'Cats (27-13, 22-11 CCAA) tomorrow with a double-header set to being at 12 noon.
