Medina Clubs Two Home Runs in 14-6 Runaway Over San Diego Christian

Box Score
SAN DIEGO -- Junior slugger Abel Medina belted his fourth and fifth home runs of the year en route to a 4-for-5, 6RBI effort as the Toros won their fifth straight and eighth game in their last nine in routing host San Diego Christian College 14-6 to improve to 24-10 on the season.

Ranked No. 22 in the nation, the Toros broke the game open early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings to take a 7-1 lead.  After a Kyle Pond ground out and Brian Sturgis 2RBI single drove in the first three runs of the game, two passed balls and a 3-run blast by Medina gave CSUDH all the runs it would need in the contest.

Up 8-3 heading into the sixth, both teams exchanged three-run frames, with two of the Toro runs courtesy of Medina's second bomb of the day, a 2-run job to make the score 11-6 in favor of the visitors, before CSUDH tacked on three more runs over the final two innings to account for the final tally.

CSUDH starter Kody Kurowski scattered 11 hits and gave up five earned runs, but the offensive efforts of Medina, Carlos Levya (2-5, 3R), Pond (1-4, 3RBI), Steve Carrillo (2-3) and Kevin Logan (2-4) more than proved sufficient in this contest.

Junior Kevin Pillar also contributed to the 17-hit attack, stroking a single in his first at-bat to extend his record-setting hitting streak to 32 games and counting.

Toro relievers Johnny Silva and Alan Gatz tossed a combined three innings, allowing one hit between them in the convincing win, dropping the hosts to 5-20 on the year.

The Toros will continue non-conference action as they host the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos in a single game on Toro Field tomorrow at 12 noon.
