Sturgis Stands Tall to Drive Toros to 6-3 Opening Win Over Sonoma State

Box Score
SANTA ROSA -- Fourth-year senior Brian Sturgis couldn't have picked a better time to nab his second and third RBIs of the season, driving in the go-ahead run in the fourth and eventual game-winner in the sixth to hand the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team a 6-3 decision over the host Seawolves of Sonoma State.

The Toros struck first in the game, with Carlos Leyva taking full advantage of the lead-off position to grab first after being plunked, steal second and take home on an Abel Medina sac fly.

With the Seawolves nipping at their heels and twice tying the ballgame, the Toro turning point came in the sixth as both Kevin Logan and Sturgis connected on back-to-back RBI singles to bring in the tying and game-winning runs.

Austin Hogans gave the hosts their only big fly in the loss, sending a long ball over the left field fence in the sixth frame.

Picking up his third decision to now stand with a perfect 3-0 mark, starter Kody Kurowski fanned five batters in 6.2 innings of duty, giving up only three hits.  Matt Phillips grabbed his second save after shutting down any chance of a SSU comeback in the ninth.

Taking the loss, Scott Alexander struck out six in five frames while giving up one hit per inning as well.

The win improves the Toros to a 10-6 overall mark and keeps them at 6-3 in the CCAA, while dropping SSU to 7-7 (1-4 CCAA).

Due to field conditions at Sonoma State, the Toros will take on the Seawolves tomorrow in a double-header scheduled at Vacaville Christian at 11:15 am.
