Toros Trade Long Shots With Eagles Before Grabbing 5-3 Win

Box Score
CARSON -- After giving up two early bombs to the visiting Eagles of Concordia University Irvine and facing a 3-2 deficit, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team was lifted to a win as Abel Medina smashed a first-pitch shot over right center to hand the Toros a 5-3 win, improving them to 23-10 on the season.

The Toros struck first, adding single runs in both the third and fourth frames to extend their lead to 2-0, the second courtesy of Steve Carrillo, who reached on a double and scored after an Eagle wild pitch.

Enjoying their lead, the Toros were forced to play catch-up after CUI's Sam Pavlisick belted a solo shot in the fifth, followed by a 2RBI bomb from Kyle Konicek in the sxth, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

The was as far as the visitors would get as Medina blasted his homer in the sixth, bringing Carlos Leyva home with him for what would prove to be the game-winning runs.

Carrillo gave CSUDH an insurance run in the eighth, reaching base on a walk and scoring on an RBI single.

Getting the starting nod, Michael Cruz fanned four batters in six full innings and gave up only six hits.

Taking over in the seventh, Sean Wardour recorded the win, facing only eight batters in three innings, striking out one while allowing no hits.

Continuing his solid play, Kevin Pillar connected on a single in the third to extend his consecutive-game hitting streak to 31, tying for the all-time CCAA record now shared by Larry Beardman of Cal Poly Pomona.

The Toros, now 23-10, will continue non-conference action as they travel to San Diego Christian on Thursday for a single game set at 3:00pm.
