Offense Produces 22 Runs and 29 Hits in CCAA Sweep of Cal State L.A.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- Junior Abel Medina went 7-for-9 with five RBI and four runs scored as CSUDH posted 22 runs and 29 hits in a 10-9 (11) and 12-2 sweep over cross-town rival Cal State L.A. to take three of four from the Golden Eagles in the regular season series.

With his seven total hits on the day Medina joins five other Toros who have also posted seven hits in a double-header, the current Toro record.  Most recent on the list is Paul-Michael Klingsberg, who tallied seven against Cal State San Bernardino in 2009.

The opener saw the Toros build a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth inning, before the visitors began their comeback with two in the seventh.  With shades of last night's near collapse fresh on their minds, CSUDH answered with three runs of its own in their 7th inning at-bat, with two courtesy of a Medina 2RBI double, only to see CSULA answer again with five runs in the final two innings of regulation, forcing extra frames.

After neither squad was able to score in the 10th, CSUDH loaded the bases in the 11th, the key at-bat courtesy of a successful Carlos Leyva sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, after popping up an attempted sacrifice bunt two innings earlier, to load the bases when the speedster beat out the throw to first base.

That set the stage for Medina, who roped his fifth hit of the game to the wall in dead center, giving the Toros a thrilling 10-9 decision.

Freshman Andrew Klausmeier tossed the final inning to pick up the win (4-1), while starter Bret Montgomery's 6.2 innings of work set the stage for the bullpen's heroics.

With the run in their 11th inning at-bat, CSUDH handed CSULA's Matt Stropoli his first loss of the year (4-1).

The nightcap was decided early as as the Toros made quick work of CSULA starter Cliff Quick, tagging him for 10 hits and 11 runs in 3.1 innings, including eight in a second inning that saw CSUDH send 12 batters to the plate.

That was more than enough for Toro starter David Fair, who tossed a solid 6.0 innings to pick up the win, moving him to a perfect 3-0 on the year.

Kevin Logan boasted the big bat in this contest with a 3-for-4 effort, while John Skala and Kyle Pond drove home two runs apiece.

Junior award-winning center fielder Kevin Pillar enjoyed identical 2-for-3 outings in each game, running his CSUDH record hit streak to 30 games and counting.

With his seven total hits on the day Medina joins five other Toros who have also posted seven hits in a double-header, the current Toro record. Most recent on the list is Paul-Michael Klingsberg who tallied seven against Cal State San Bernardino in 2009.

Sam Wiley paced the Golden Eagles with a 3-for-5 performance in the opener, including a towering home run to dead center, while CSULA was limited to just six hits in the nightcap.

Now with a 22-10, 17-7 CCAA mark, CSUDH continues its homestand on Tuesday, March 30, with a non-conference single game against Concordia University Irvine.  First pitch is set for 3:00 pm on Toro Field.
