Toros Break Out the Power to Sweep Coyotes in 4-2 & 4-3 Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SAN BERNARDINO -- With the score knotted at two apiece in both games of the series, both Dean Benavidez (pictured) and Steve Carrillo launched game-winning homers to power the No. 30 Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team to a double-header sweep over the No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes in 4-2 and 4-3 wins.

The Toros wasted little time in getting on the board in game one, as back-to-back singles from the Nos. 2 and 3 batters set the stage for Kevin Pillar, who belted a two-RBI single through the middle for his 25th straight game with a hit.

After shutting down the side in order for the first two innings, game one starter Bret Montgomery had his first trouble of the day, giving up two Coyote home runs to James Kono and Ethan Chapman, CSUSB's only runs of the game.

Holding a tie for the next full frame, Benavidez, wearing jersey No. 5, came up huge in the fifth with his fifth homer of the season to hand CSUDH its second win of the series as the Toros grabbed an insurance run later in the ninth.

Both game one pitchers were stellar from the hill, with Montgomery fanning eight batters in as many innings and scattering only five hits to grab his fourth win of the season while CSUSB's
Trevor Longfellow fanned nine Toro batters in 7.2 innings and gave up seven hits.

Game two featured more of the same as the Toros would grab their second run in the fourth frame, again from Pillar with his third homer of the four-game series and now 26th-straight game with a hit.

With the hosts also grabbing their second run in the same frame, it was Carrillo's turn to come up huge as he sent his second hit of the game well over the left-center fence to bring in two more for the Toros, enough for the win.

Pitching in relief in the nightcap, Andrew Klausmeier grabbed the win after 3.1 innings of duty, fanning three 'Yotes and scattering only two hits.

A star from the mound, Matt Phillips took on closing duties in both games, grabbing his sixth and seventh saves of the year in 1.1 innings of play with two hits and strikeouts.

The game two loss went to Daniel Stenavich, who scattered eight hits and fanned three batters in 5.2 innings of work.

Today's offensive star went to Pillar, who in eight chances he connected for four hits with a homer and three RBI.

Now with a 19-9 overall mark and 14-6 in the CCAA, the Toros have moved to No. 2 in the CCAA for the first time this season and will take on the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A., with game one of the four-game set scheduled on the CSULA campus on March 25 at 3:00pm.
