Toros Escape Split to Grab 8-6 & 5-1 Sweeping Wins Over Pioneers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- Narrowly escaping a 3-6 loss in game one the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team bounced back in their final offensive inning to grab an 8-6 decision before taking the Cal State East Bay Pioneers 5-1 in the nightcap.  Fuel for fiery hitting, Steve Carrillo went 5-of-8 with two triples and three RBI to lead the Toros.

In game one, the visitors landed a spot on the board first as, just as yesterday, a solo shot in the second this time from Charlie Sharrer gave CSUEB a 1-0 lead.

The Toros answered back in the bottom with a John Skala RBI-double and Dean Benavidez RBI-single gave CSUDH the lead at 2-1.

The scored remained low until the fifth as the Pioneers battle back with one away to ride three hits for three runs to take a healthy 4-2 lead, a lead that would stretch through the eighth.

Down 6-3 in their final offensive frame another Skala double sparked an offensive rally ending in four Toro hits and five runs, the game-winning hit coming from Carrillo.

Carrillo was once again key in game two, landing the Toros their first run with a triple to deep right-center that brought him home three at-bats later.

The Toros would need another run in game two for the win after the Pioneers grabbed their second homer of the day from Nick McManus.

Abel Medina provided the game two winning run, belting an RBI-single to safely see home Benavidez.

Starting in game one, Shane Youngdale logged 5.2 innings with four strike outs before Andrew Klausmeier would take over in relief and grab the win after .2 innings with no Pioneer hits or runs.

In game two Bret Montgomery logged his third complete game of the season, fanning four CSUEB batters while giving up only one hit.

Also key in the offensive thrust, Kevin Pillar went 3-of-7 with a hit in each game to improve his game hitting streak to 21, two short of tying the CSUDH record.

The pair of wins improves the Toros to a 16-7 overall mark (11-4 CCAA) while dropping the Pioneers to 5-16-1 overall and 2-13 in the CCAA.  Game four of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00am at Toro Field.
