Toros Pick Apart Pioneers in 9-1 Series Opening Win

Box Score
CARSON -- Securing the win after only the first inning, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team improved its win streak to four-straight in a 9-1 decision over the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay, highlighted by a Max Anderson inside-the-park homer in the eighth frame.

The Toros wasted little time in grabbing runs as Kyle Pond grabbed his first of two doubles on the day in the first inning before taking home on an Abel Medina single for a 1-0 lead.

Medina would then score on a Steve Carillo RBI-single to land the Toros a 2-0 lead, all they would need on the day.

Grabbing another run in the second, Kevin Pillar fueled another big inning in the fifth to send home both Pond and Medina as his first of two hits extended his hitting streak to 19, four shy of the Toro record of 23.

The following frame the visitors managed to put a slight scare in Toro starter Kody Kurowski by getting runners on the corners with one out, but Kurowski fanned the next batter he faced, and induced a fly out to end the threat.

Not wanting to be shut out, CSUEB got its only run of the day in the top of the eighth as Devin Grigg blasted a solo shot over the right field fence to bring the score to 6-1.

Putting his fifth at-bat of the season to perfect use, Anderson gave his bench a show, sending a base-clearing blast over CSUEB's center fielder before burning up the base paths and taking home, barely eluding the Pioneer catcher in a bang-bang play.

Swinging the biggest bat on the day, Pond went 3-4, reaching first in four of his five plate appearances while belting two double and scoring three runs.

Earning his fourth win to stay perfect in the books, Kurowski threw seven innings and fanned eight batters, giving up only five hits.

Matt McCormick grabbed his first loss of the season after scattering eight hits and fanning six batters in six innings.

Now with a 14-7 overall and 9-4 mark in the CCAA, the Toros will continue the series against the Pioneers (5-14-1, 2-11 CCAA) with a twinbill set to start at 11:00am tomorrow on Toro Field.
