CARSON -- Designated player Kyle Pond and shortstop Dean Benavidez (pictured) matched one another with 2 hits, 1 home run and 4RBI each to lead the Toros to a 12-8 slug fest win over visiting Cal Poly Pomona this afternoon on Toro Field, achieving a split of the regular season series at two wins apiece as each squad took both games on their home field.

In that frame the Broncos tallied two runs off two hits as a Travis Taijeron homer brought the score up to 8-7, the Broncos third lead of the game.

The Toros had their most powerful inning on the day in the bottom of the frame with both Benavidez and Pond matching shots over the left field fence to bring in all five of the Toros' runs in the inning, securing the win at 12-8.

Prior to the final frame the Toros posted two separate leads, the first at 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth with a Jose Serrano single and Benavidez double bringing in a combined three runs.

Pond again played catchup to Benavidez's power hitting in the seventh, giving CSUDH their second lead at 7-6 with a hard line single through the right.

The two teams sent a combined seven hurlers to the mound, Matt Phillips recorded the win for the Toros following 1.2 innings of play with two strike outs while the loss goes to Casey Yokubaitis who gave up the deciding run off Benavidez's long shot in the eighth.

Earning a no-decision and starting in action for the Toros, David Fair logged 6.1 innings with a blistering 127 pitches and fanned six batters to give up five earned runs.

The two benches matched equal in hitting with 15 apiece, Steve Carrillo led for the Toros on a 3-for-5 effort, reaching home safely four times.

A duo of Broncos led the visitors with three hits each coming from Erik Riedel whom scored thrice and Tyson Edwards adding one for CPP.

The win improves the Toros to a 9-6 overall mark and 5-3 in the CCAA.  With rain still on the horizon, the Toros will travel to Sonoma State for a four-game series this weekend.  First pitch is slated for now on Friday, March 5 at 2:00pm.
