Late Innings Prove Costly as Toros Drop Twinbill to Broncos, 7-6 and 5-4

POMONA -- It just wasn't Cal State Dominguez Hills' day as two key league wins against Cal Poly Pomona seemed within their grasp, only to see the host Broncos use late-inning rallies to send the Toros home with 7-6 and 5-4 losses.  With the big bat on the day, John Skala blasted a go-ahead double in game one and ended the day with four hits.

In the opener, the Toros enjoyed a five-run lead going into the bottom of the last frame, a run barrage started by a Skala single in the fifth that saw him scamper home on a wild pitch.

Barrett Ceverha solidified what looked to be a Toro win with a solo shot in the ninth that put CSUDH up 5-0.

The hosts had other plans in the final frame, however, as with two outs after back-to-back Matt Phillips strikeouts, the Broncos used four straight hits to grab five runs and tie the game before taking the win in the tenth.

In game two, the Toros enjoyed a 4-1 lead before yet again four Bronco hits, including a three-RBI double from Nick Tanos, secured CPP the daily sweep.

Aside from Skala, Kevin Logan was the other Toro big bat on the day with three hits and three RBI.

Starting game one, Shane Youngdale was credited with a no-decision after fanning five batters in eight innings and giving up only one hit, flirting with perfection after five innings and a no-hitter through six.  Sean Wardour would record the loss after facing six batters and fanning two before walking the game-winning run in the end.

The game two loss went to Cole McCune who, after facing only four batters, gave up the deciding run.  Bret Montgomery threw six innings in the nightcap and added seven batters to his strikeout total.

The losses give the Broncos a one-game edge in the series at 2-1.  The Toros are now 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA.  CSUDH will play host tomorrow is the series finale with first pitch at 2:00pm.
