CARSON -- Three scoring innings and three Cal Poly Pomona errors were all Cal State Dominguez Hills needed to take a 9-5 decision over the visiting Broncos in game one of the teams' four-game CCAA Conference set. Kyle Pond (pictured) and Abel Medina combined for a 5-for-9 effort with 6 RBI in the win, with Pond enjoying a bases-clearing double to put the game away in the seventh inning.
The Toros struck first in the 3rd inning as Medina belted a two-run blast over the right field fence after Pond drew an 8-pitch walk to get on base.
After the Broncos answered with four in their their 4th-inning at-bat on five hits, CSUDH took the lead for good with four runs of their own in the 4th inning on four hits and two costly Bronco errors, accounting for three unearned runs in the frame and a 6-4 Toro lead.
CPP looked to begin another rally with a single run in the 6th inning, but a bases-clearing double by Pond on the first pitch he saw from Bronco reliever Travis Kelly put an end to any hopes of a Cal Poly Pomona comeback, providing the final scoring on the day.
Kody Kurowski earned the win (2-0) after 7.0 innings of work, fanning four against just two walks, while his counterpart Kevin Bosson took the loss (2-2) after lasting just 3.2 innings, with 6 runs (3 earned) allowed on the afternoon.
Shutting down the opposition yet again in his fifth appearance, Matt Phillips logged two innings of play and fanned four of his seven faced batters while not giving up a hit to solidify Kurowski's win.
In addition to Pond's 4RBI, Medina went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, with Kevin Logan chipping in two hits in the win.
The Toros, now 8-4, 4-1 CCAA, and Broncos (9-5, 3-2 CCAA) hook up again tomorrow for a twinbill in Pomona, weather permitting.
