Toros Pull Out Late Day Split With Gators in 2-6 Loss and 9-8 Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team got off to a slow start in its CCAA double-header against the San Francisco State Gators after a 6-2 loss, but regrouped in the nightcap in a dramatic 9-8 win after taking an early 6-0 lead.  Kevin Pillar wielded the big bat in the nightcap with a first-inning blast.

Game one featured an old fashioned pitchers duel for the first three innings of play, before the visitors plated the game's first run in the top of the fourth.  Adding two more two innings later, CSUDH broke through in their 6th inning at-bat after a Dean Benavidez solo blast that put the Toros withing striking distance at 3-1.

That run, however, seemed to pump up SFSU even more as the Gators added three in the 8th, the big blow coming on a 2RBI double by Ryan Williams, who had 3 hits in the game, all but putting the game out of reach in the 6-2 win.

The nightcap was all CSUDH from the get-go as a 3-run bomb by Kevin Pillar highlighted a 4-run first.  Adding another in the 3rd and 4th innings to take a 6-0 lead seemed like icing on the proverbial cake, but SFSU clawed back with two in the 5th and four in the 6th to tie the game at 6-6, with two runs coming via Toro miscues.

SFSU looked to complete its comeback after a 2-run blast gave the visitors an 8-6 lead in the top of the 7th, but a Toro rally was completed after Kyle Pond delivered a 2RBI single down the right field line to bring home the second and third runs of the inning, giving CSUDH a split of today's twinbill.

Starting in action in game two, Bret Montgomery shut down the side the first three of his five innings of action, fanning five batters and allowing only one earned run.  The loss in game one goes to Shane Youngdale who after 7.1 innings of duty fanned a total of four batters.

Matt Phillips picked up the win after 1.2 innings of work, while closer Nic Banaugh suffered the loss after entering in the 7th, and retiring just one batter.

The two teams complete their four-game set tomorrow morning on Toro Field, with first pitch set for 11:00 am in Carson.
