Overtime Plagues Toros in 60-63 Loss to San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO -- A powerhouse second-half in which they outscored their hosts on a too close 30-28 margin only led way into a tough overtime before the Cal State Dominsguez Hills women's basketball team fell 60-63 to the Gators of San Francisco State.  Pulling down her sixth double-double of the season, Neka Mixon led all Toros with 19 points and 10 boards.

Looking to extend their current win-streak to three games, the Toros entered the first half slow, allowing their hosts to build up to a 10-point lead at 12-2 with 16:30 left, SFSU's biggest on the night.

The ensuing efforts of Mixon, Kayla Montalvo and Whitney Gantt began a 10-minute push that saw the game knotted at 16-16 before a Mixon lay gave CSUDH their first lead with five minutes left in the half.

Coming out of the break with the lead the Toros worked hard to keep it that way, grabbing their biggest of the night with 12:41 left in regulation off a Mixon jumper to bring the game to 40-32.

It seemed that for the second night in a row Mixon would give her team a buzzer-beating win as a final shot in the last remaining second missed its mark to send the game into overtime.

The Gators played with their own first-half intensity in the final five, grabbing a two-point lead 8-seconds in before notching two freebies to grab the 63-60 win despite the late-night effort of Gantt whom gave CSUDH a 61-60 deficit with :09 left in the night.

Leading the charge, Mixon grabbed her sixth double-double of the season and has now notched seven straight in double-digit scoring.

Both MacKenzie Mathias and Montalvo added double-digits of their own at 13 apiece.

Making the final regulation shot to send the game into OT, Dominique Hunter led the Gators with 16 points with Nicole Hicks adding 12 of her own.

The loss drops the Toros to a 9-14 overall record (8-10 CCAA) and keeps them tied at eighth in the CCAA.  CSUDH will close out the 2009-10 season with hosting duties next weekend as they take on the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino on February 19th at 5:30pm.
