Ten Years in the Making: Bret Montgomery Throws Complete-Game No-Hitter

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
LOS ANGELES -- It took ten years and two days but Bret Montgomery added a new line to the Toros' pitching no-hitter list, tossing a 7-inning complete-game 5-0 win against the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles in the double header nightcap.

Montgomery, already a well-known in the 'pen with 11 strike outs against UC San Diego on March 13, 2008, a Toro single-game record, walked three and struck out five in the 5-0 win.

The last time a Toro threw a no-hitter was February 11, 2000 against Cal Baptist University as Kevin Halamicek fanned nine batters in as many innings in a 8-0 win.  Including Montgomery there are now five CSUDH no-hitters in the programs history.

Offensively there was none better than Kevin Pillar, the junior gave his squad all the winning runs in both games.

With runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs in the books, Pillar nailed a single through the left to send both home, landing Pillar his only hit of the game and the eventual game-winner.  Game two was just as important for Pillar, a well-placed sacrifice bunt in the fourth frame sent home Abel Medina for the first mark on the board.

In the first game,
both Andrew Baslow and Kyle Pond slammed single RBI doubles in the ninth to give the Toros two more runs and end the game 4-1.

Game one starter Shane Youngdale had his best outing to date in picking up the win throwing 8.2 innings and fanning eight batters, both single-game highs this season.  Also a standout in game, Alan Gatz made his debut in the Cardinal & Gold to record the last out of the game with the tying run at the plate, picking up a save in the process.

In game two, after wearing down the Golden Eagles staff four Toro walks gave them three more runs to finish the game 5-0.

The pair of wins improve the Toros to a 4-3 overall record while pushing them to 4-1 against NCAA opponents.  CSUDH will see action tomorrow as they face off in an alumni festival with a home run derby set to start at 10:40am and the Toros vs. Alumni game at 12:15pm.

CSUDH will return to regular action as they host the Gators of San Francisco State this coming weekend in a four-game CCAA series, first action begins February 19th at 12-noon.
