Toros Outhit But Can't Outrun Golden Eagles in 8-6 Loss at Toro Field

Box Score
CARSON - A perfect defense and fiery bats were not enough as the visiting Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. used a seventh-inning push to fly past the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team in an 8-6 loss.  Designated hitter Kyle Pond was perfect from the dish, going 3-of-3 with two RBIs.

Both the hosts and the visitors wasted little time getting a good thing going, with each starting their first at-bats with singles that eventually scored and ending the first frame in a 2-2 tie.

The Toros grabbed their first lead in the third following an Abel Medina double, his second straight of the game, and a deep Pond single through the left side that easily sent Medina home.

Grabbing three more total runs in the fourth and fifth yet again off the bats of Medina and Pond with the help of a two-RBI blast from Kevin Pillar, the Toros look poised to enjoy a 6-2 lead for the night.

The Golden Eagles had other plans in the seventh, however, belting six hits off three CSUDH hurlers to grab five more runs, the game-winner courtesy of Sam Wiley with a two-RBI bomb over the left field fence.

Defensively, the Toros were a wall, making 27 putouts in as many chances, besting the visitors, who committed one error in the contest.

The Toros also bested their foe from the mound with a team-total seven strikeouts, led by starter Kody Kurowski and closer Cole McCune with three apiece.

Picking up the win for the Golden Eagles, Matt Stropoli also fanned three batters.

The loss falls on the shoulders of Andrew Klausmeier after he gave up the decisive run in the seventh, putting him now at an 1-1 record.

Pond led the Toros at the bag with a perfect 3-for-3 effort, followed by Medina's 3-for-4 and two doubles,  while Carlos Leyva rounded out the offensive threats going 3-for-5.

The Toros now post a 1-3 record overall and will continue the four-game series against CSULA with hosting duties tomorrow at 2:00pm.
