Grijalva Grounds Toros in 8-3 Loss to Biola University

Box Score
CARSON, Calif. -- Transfer junior Jeff Grijalva proved his worth for the Biola University Eagles, allowing only two Toro hits in 6 innings to best the Toro effort of transfer junior power-hitter Kyle Pond, handing the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team an 8-3 loss to open the 2010 season.

The Toros were unable to connect on a hit for the first five complete frames, until a Brian Sturgis single to left field in the sixth got the CSUDH action started and ended Grijalva's bid for a no-no.

Following the Sturgis smack, a Steve Carrillo hard double through the right side brought Sturgis to third before a pickle after the next batter grounded out landed Sturgis out at third base and shut down the first scoring opportunity the Toros saw on the day.

The visiting Eagles got their bats started early, with Trevor Blood blasting two long balls in his first two at-bats, in the second and third frames. The second blast would bring home three runs and give BU a 6-0 lead.

As the sun began to set, a late-in-the-day Pond blast on a 2-1 count with two on gave the Toros three much-needed tallies on the board before a final strike out ended the day for the hosts, giving CSUDH an opening season 8-3 loss.

Five different Toros connected on the day, led by Pond's three-RBI blast.  Going 1-for-4, Andrew Baslow scored a run, while Carrillo provided the rest of the offensive boost with his double.

From the mound, CSUDH saw five Toros in action. Taking the loss in his Carson debut, Shane Youngdale fanned one batter and gave up six hits.  The defensive standout for the 'pen was newcomer Sean Wardour, who in 3.1 innings of action fanned two batters and allowed no hits.

Opening 2010 with a 0-1 record, the Toros will next see action in the John Scolinos Memorial Tournament in Compton, California, at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.  CSUDH will face the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona on February 4 at 6:00pm, weather permitting.
