Toros' Rally Comes Up Short Against No. 20 Chico State, 71-59

Box Score CARSON -- Coming into a game that looked like a complete mismatch on paper, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros played their hearts out before eventually falling to No. 20 Chico State Wildcats 71-59. Junior Tiffany Smith led the team with 18 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals on the afternoon.

In the first half the Toros played very well, taking the lead at 19-17 over the 20th ranked Wildcats. However Chico State sank five three-pointers in a row transforming a two point deficit to a 13-point lead.  The Toros would close the half on a 9-2 run to keep the game close, trailing only 34-28 at halftime. CSUDH's bench was key was they scored 16 of the team's 28, led by Smith and her eight points and four steals.

With the game still up for grabs, the Wildcats started the second half by scoring five straight to appear to take control of the game with an 11-point lead. But the Toros would make it a game, taking a 53-52 lead with 8:12 left in the game. The teams would trade the lead several times over the next five minutes until the Wildcats scored 13 straight to take a 12 point lead at 69-57, all but clinching the contest.

For the game the Toros shot 38% compared to 47% by the Wildcats. CSUDH dominated the game with 13 steals compared to only six by the visitors. Freshman guard Hillarie Perrin-Grant was lights out from behind the arc, going 5-of-10 from three, scoring 17 points total. Nikki Boutte' added eight points, four rebounds and 4 assists for the game.

The Toros, still looking for their first win of the 2010-11 season, return to action on the road next Friday against San Francisco State Gators at 5:30pm.
