No. 15 Toros Take Sole Possession of First Place After 76-65 Win Over Chico State

Box Score
CARSON -- Seniors Marcquintice Davis and Zareh Zargaryan led a quartet of Toros who scored in double figures with 16 points apiece to lead No. 15 Cal State Dominguez Hills to a workman-like win over visiting Chico State, giving CSUDH sole possession of first place in the CCAA after closing the calendar year with a win.

The Toros got off to a quick start on the final day of 2010, taking a 9-2 lead with just under three minutes elapsed on the clock.  The Wildcats, however, looked to end their year on a high note, cutting the lead to 15-14 on an old fashioned 3-point play at the 12:06 mark, and then taking the lead on a Josh Jackson triple after a Toro miss.

CSUC pushed its lead to 22-17 on a pair of Roderick Hawkins free throws, only to see the Toros reply behind 10 first half points by Zargaryan en route to a 39-37 first half lead.

The two teams played to their sixth tie at 42-42 after 2:22 ticked off the clock in the second half, until a 9-2 run gave CSUDH control of the game for good at 51-44.

The Toros then stretched their lead to double figures on a Rashad Bias triple, where it hovered until the final 76-65 decision after CSUDH sank its final eight free throws of the game, including four by senior James Cawthorne.

Although the Wildcats enjoyed 22 offensive rebounds en route to a commanding 21-7 edge in second chance points, Bias' defense helped hold CSUC's best scorer Damario Sims eight points below his season average of 14, a key factor in the win.

CSUDH shot a stellar 59.2% from the field, led by Davis' 5-for-7 and Robert Willhite's 4-for-6 efforts, and a solid 76.5% from the charity stripe.  CSUC, meanwhile, managed to make just 34.8% of its attempts, and just 58.8% of its free throws.

Beyond the arc, the Toros remained on target after connecting for 5-of-8, while the Wildcats suffered to the tune of a 9-for-31 performance in falling to 7-3, 3-3 CCAA.

With the win, the 9-1 Toros are within one win from matching their best start over an 11-game stretch, with the 1980-81 and 1995-96 teams led by head coach and Torodome court namesake Dave Yanai posting 10-1 marks to begin their respective seasons.

Now 9-1 and 5-1 CCAA, CSUDH takes to the road for consecutive weekends after the new year, before returning home to host Sonoma State and Humboldt State the weekend of January 21 and 22, with both games available for live viewing on internet TV via www.GoToros.com/live.
