Long Range Success Spurs No. 15 Toros to 64-53 Win Over Warriors

Box Score
CARSON -- Junior guard Cornell Jenkins' 4-of-6 shooting from long range led an attack that saw No. 15 CSUDH connect on 52.4% from 3-point land in taking a hard-fought 64-53 win over visiting Cal State Stanislaus this afternoon.  Jenkins finished with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field as the Toros improved to 8-1, 4-1 CCAA.

The visitors came to play on the penultimate day of the calendar year, taking a 16-7 lead on a Prince Abidoye triple with just eight minutes elapsed in the game.  CSUS used a Reggie Jones jumper to again take a 9-point cushion at 18-9 with 10:49 left in the opening stanza, before an 11-0 run, capped by two 3-pointers by Jenkings, gave the hosts a 21-18 edge, only to have the Warriors reclaim the lead and take a 31-28 edge into the locker room.

CSUS again started fast after the break, enjoying a 37-29 advantage on a Dwight Jones lay-up in the paint.

The Toros, however, behind 5 Jenkins points and a pair of free throws by Marcquintice Davis, whittled the lead to just one, where another triple by Jenkins gave CSUDH the lead for good.

CSUDH used two more freebies and a three by Davis to push its lead to 44-40, and enjoyed its first double-figure lead of the afternoon at 52-42 on a Rashad Bias 3-pointer with 8:10 left in regulation.

The hosts pushed their lead to as much as 15 at 58-43, keeping the Warriors near the double-figure deficit mark the rest of the way en route to the 64-53 decision.

Robert Willhite led all scorers with 15 points, chipping in six boards as one of three Toros to accumulate six rebounds in the game.

Jenkins finished with a career high 14 points after scoring just two points this year, playing 16 minutes in the process.

CSUS' Evan Scott tallied the game's lone double-double of 12 points and 10 boards as the Warriors fell to 3-6, 1-4 CCAA.

As a team, CSUDH shot a sizzling 51.4% from the field and an even better 52.4% from behind the 3-point line, while CSUS managed to make just 37% of its shots, including just 31.8% from 3-point land.

The Warriors out-boarded the Toros by four, but a 5-2 edge for the Toros in blocks contributed to the 21 defensive rebounds for CSUDH.

The Toros close out the calendar year with a 2:30 pm contest tomorrow against Chico State, which fell 71-62 at Cal State L.A. earlier this afternoon.  The game can be seen live via internet TV on www.GoToros.com/live.
