Grand Canyon Too Much for Toros in 79-53 Win

PHOENIX, AZ -- For the second game in a row the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros couldn't put together two solid halves to make a complete game.  This time it was the second half that fell CSUDH in a 79-53 loss to Grand Canyon.  Junior Nikki Boutte' scored a career-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.

The first half saw the teams trade the lead, with neither team holding a lead larger than five points.  CSUDH took a four point lead at 13-9 to cap a 7-1 run on a lay-up by Meghan Duron.  The 'Lopes turned it on from there, though, going on a 15-1 run over the next five minutes.  However the Toros battled back from down eight to within four, going in at half down 28-24.  Boutte was the catalyst from the half with seven points, four rebounds and an assist.


Riding the momentum from the end of the first half, the Toros kept the game within two possessions, culminating in a 37-32 deficit with 16:47 left in the game.  GCU flexed its muscles over the next eight minutes, outscoring the Toros 19-4 to grab a 20 point lead.  GCU's lead ballooned up to 32 in the final minutes before the game ended at 79-53. Samantha Murphy of the Lopes, the reigning PacWest Player of the Year, scored 20 of her 30 points in the second half.


For the game CSUDH shot 31% compared to 44% by GCU while both teams combined for 60 turnovers. The Toros did shoot 41% (7-17) from behind the arc, but were out-rebounded 48-31 including 22-13 on the offensive glass. Grand Canyon, 6-1, accumulated an amazing 21 assists on 27 made baskets.


Junior Ashley Hudson gathered her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards, seven of which were offensive. Freshman Hillarie Perrin-Grant scored nine points, seven in the first half, to go along with three assists.


The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, 0-5, will continue CCAA play against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, December 3rd at 5:30pm in the Torodome on the Dave Yanai Court, which can be seen live via internet TV at www.GoToros.com/live.
