Toros Drop CCAA Opener to CSULA, 75-62

CARSON -- Despite a great offensive effort by Cal State Dominguez Hills, they fell victim to the red-hot shooting of their rival Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles by a 75-62 final.  With four Toros in double figures and a dominating effort on the board, CSUDH played their best game overall this season.  Junior Brittni Hulsizer led the team with 13 points, including nailing all three of her three point attempts.

In the first half both team were scorching from the field, shooting 60 and 48 percent respectively.  From beyond the arc each team drained at least five 3's and made at least 61.5% of their shots beyond the arc.  After an initial run that saw CSULA take a 15-4 lead, the Toros came storming back by scoring nine straight to show they were in for a tough game.
At half it was still anyone's game at 41-33 Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A., now 3-0, 1-0 CCAA, began to pull away in the first five minutes of the second half, scoring 14 points compared to only three by Dominguez Hills.  Free throw shooting kept the Toros within reach, sinking 9-of-15 free throws compared 3-of-7 of CSULA for the half.  With the gap down to only 13, L.A. sank a three to capture the momentum and put the Toros to rest.

For the game CSUDH shot a solid 44% from the field including 52.9% (9-17) from three.  The Toros were done in by 23 turnovers but did win the rebounding battle 31-23 including 11 offensive boards.  CSULA shot a whooping 56% from the field including an amazing 59% (13-22) from three, while dishing out 18 assists.  L.A.'s Erika Ruiz led both team in scoring with 20, despite coming off the bench.

Three Toros scored in double figures: Ashley Hudson with 12, 8-of-10 from the line, while Sherrie Hughes and Kayla Huckabee had 10 each. Hughes lead the team with six rebounds and Nikki Boutte' handed out seven assists.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, now 0-3, 0-1 CCAA, will return to action this Friday at 1:00PM against nationally recognized Washburn University in the Crowne Plaza Tip-off Classic at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ.
