Toros Stung by Yellowjackets in Season Opening 67-37 Loss

Box Score
BELMONT -- Maybe it was the inexperience or maybe it was the long road trip.  Whatever it was, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team never got into the 2010-11 season opener, losing to Montana State-Billings 67-37. Junior Nikki Boutte' led the Toros with a career high nine points and nine rebounds in her first career start.

With a starting lineup with a total of 31 combined career starts, 24 by Brandie McCann alone, nerves and an adjustment period is to be expected.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first 2:20, draining their first four shots, all three-pointers.

CSUDH struggled to sink a shot, shooting 16.2% (6-37) from the field, 8.3% (1-12) from three and 42.9% (3-7) from the line in the first half.  However, the Toros excelled on the glass with 15 offensive rebounds in the first half, six from Sherrie Hughes.

In the second half, CSUDH found way to score 21 before dismal 5-25 shooting from the floor dealt the final blow.  For the game Dominguez Hills shot 17.7% (11-62) from the field for the game, 11.1% (2-18) from behind the arc while winning the rebounding battle 50-45.

Hughes scored seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Fellow junior Brittni Hulsizer added eight points, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. The Yellowjackets were lead by a double-double from Beata Bak.

The Toros (0-1) return to action in the Notre Dame de Namur Tournament as they take on tournament host tomorrow night with tip-off at 7:00pm.
