Toros Notch Fifth-Straight Shutout in 3-0 Win Over Arch-Rival Sonoma State

CARSON -- Senior Alex Munoz saved his teammates from their third-consecutive halftime pep talk by scoring in the 13th minute against arch-rival Sonoma State en route to a 3-0 win that saw CSUDH dominate the second-half play.

After failing to score a first half goal in its previous three games, Munoz made sure that unenviable streak came to an end early after taking a free kick to SSU keeper Juan Sosa's right at 12:10, and beating him near post with a 30-foot bender that lodged itself in the upper V.

That's where the score remained until late in the second half, when Andre Turoldo doubled CSUDH's edge in the 79th minute, taking a Wyatt Stucker slot and besting Sosa with a rocket for a 2-0 cushion.

CSUDH's lead increased to three just seven minutes later after Turoldo sent a shot that ricocheted off Sosa's hands and up into the air, where Jordan Rover used his entire 5'10" frame to rise above the 5'9" Sosa and head his shot into the back of the net for the game's final tally.

The Toros finished with a 13-6 shot advantage, including a 7-2 edge after the break, while they also out-cornered SSU 6-1. A physical contest befitting two competitive programs, 29 fouls were called, with CSUDH being whistled for 10 infractions.

Sonoma State, which fell to 8-5-1, 6-5-1 CCAA, has not beaten the Toros since October 5, 2007, a string of eight games in which CSUDH has six wins including today, with the Toros stretching their win streak over the Seawolves to four-straight.

Sosa finished with 5 saves on the day, while counterpart Markus Dickerson ended with 3 in the win.

CSUDH, now 10-2-2, 8-2-2, maintained its hold atop the CCAA South, and will travel for its next contest to cross-town rival Cal State L.A., which slipped to fourth place in the south after its 1-0 loss to Humboldt State earlier today.
