"DeVine" Intervention Wills Toros Past CS Stanislaus in Epic Five-Setter

TURLOCK -- Freshman Denise DeVine helped her team to a two-sets-to-none lead over host Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night, and then gave the Toros a late lead with her 20th kill in the decisive fifth set after the hosts rolled to wins in sets three and four en route to a thrilling 29-27, 27-25, 13-25, 15-25, 20-18 win for CSUDH's second victory of the year.

The Toros played anything like one of the league's doormats to open the match, rolling to a 10-5 lead in the early stages of CS Stanislaus' "Think Pink" night, only to have the hosts knot the game at 16-16 for the first of 12 ties, the last at 27-27 on a Kaycee Gow kill.

DeVine, however, gave CSUDH the lead for good after her own smash, and then watched as CSUS committed an attack error to give the visitors a 29-27 set one win.

CSUDH continued its aggressive play in the second, taking a 12-7 lead on an Elaine Hicks blast, one of her 20 putaways on the night as well.  The Toros' lead continued to hover around the four-point mark, until CSUS took a 21-20 lead on the strong serving of Lianne Vicchio.

Seizing momentum back, both teams battled to three more ties until an Abbey Prusa kill at 25-25 gave CSUDH set point, which DeVine cemented with a service ace for a 2-0 lead.

Not wanting to go quietly on this night, CS Stanislaus played like its namesake by storming through games three and four, limiting the blistering Toro attack to under .100 in each of the two sets to force the deciding set.

In the fifth, the hosts looked like they would complete their comeback after taking a 6-2 lead early, and a 12-8 lead late, only to have a Hicks kill, two setting and an attack error open the door for the Toros, who tied the contest at 14-14 on an Ashley Clark service ace.

That proved to be all the momentum the Toros would need, playing the Warriors even over the next eight points, including DeVine's 20th and final kill to bring CSUDH to a 16-15 lead, until a Warrior setting error gave CSUDH match point, with setter Olivia White closing the door with a service ace, the Toros' fourth and final of the evening.

DeVine and Hicks shared match-high honors with 20 kills each, while Prusa chipped in 13 in the battle.

Gow paced four Warriors in double-figure kills with 16 in the loss, dropping CSUDH to 10-9, 7-7 CCAA.

White set the stage for the upset, literally, with 63 assists, while Celeste Tuioti led the defense with 25 digs in the victory.

The Toros, now 2-16, 2-11 CCAA, continue CCAA road action with matches at national power CS San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona next weekend.
