Toros Storm Cal State L.A.'s Eagles Nest to 78-60 Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team set a scoring precedent tonight with five Toros in double-digit scoring that added to CSUDH's season-high 50.9% shooting on the night. Leading the effort with 15 points, Brandie McCann also dished six assists.

From scoring the first point only 47 seconds in off a Barbara Houston jumper, the Toros controlled the game from the first tip, not once succumbing their lead to the host Golden Eagles.

Quickly amassing a seven-point lead, CSUDH did not allow CSULA a scoring opportunity until the 15:07 mark, when Jazzi Johnson got her team on the board with a breakaway rush into the paint.

The final five minutes of the first signaled the win to come as the Toros landed 16 points, giving L.A. only four to go into the break with a 39-19 lead.

CSUDH grabbed its biggest lead of the night at 75-41 with four minutes left as a Houston pick found its way into the hands of Kayla Montalvo for an easy two.

The Eagles held tough from that point, scoring 20 points in the final 3:44 while allowing the Toros just four.

With the damage already done, a final trey from Golden Eagle Kelli McClintock was not enough as CSUDH went on for the 78-60 decision.

For the first time this season, five Toros scored in the double-figure mark, with Whitney Gantt and Neka Mixon adding 14, Montalvo 12 and MacKenzie Mathias 10 to go with McCann's 15.

The big news came in field goal percentage with the Toros grabbing a team-effort 50.9% from the floor, led by Houston's perfect 4-of-4 and Montalvo's 4-of-5.

CSULA was held to 33.8% shooting with Johnson grabbing a team-high 19 points and Jameiz Terrell coming in with 13.

CSUDH also out-grabbed the Eagles with 46-to-35 total rebounds, led by Gantt with nine.

The much needed boost lifted the Toros to a 6-11 overall mark (5-7 CCAA).  CSUDH will next see action as they hos this weekend with Humboldt State making an appearance on Friday at 5:30pm.
