Balanced Attack Leads Toros in 62-45 Rout Over Cal State L.A.

Box Score
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Oh, what a difference 21 days make.  Three weeks after visiting Cal State L.A. held as large as a 14 point lead before taking a 7 point win in the Torodome, CSUDH returned the favor this evening, and then some, in the Eagles Nest as they routed the hosts 62-45, with five Toros scoring in double figures and its defense holding CSULA to just 26.7% shooting from the field.  Jamel Ward picked up 8 boards as CSUDH out-rebounded the Golden Eagles by 10.

The Toros, who improved to 8-9, 8-4 CCAA, took sole possession of 3rd place in the CCAA Conference, while CSULA fell to 11-6, 7-5 CCAA, and out of 3rd place.

The opening stanza proved competitive, with neither squad building more than a 3-point lead in the early going through the first 14 minutes of play.  That all changed after an Amir Aguilar bucket in the paint gave CSUDH a 14-13 lead with 7:07 left in the first half, spurring a 20-6 run to close the period that saw the Toros enter intermission with a 34-19 lead.

The second half proved more of the same with the Toros extending their advantage, where it reached 20 for the first time on a Marcquintice Davis jumper with 10:15 left that gave CSUDH a 53-32 lead.

CSUDH's lead reached as high as 24 at 58-34 on another Davis bucket with 6:41 left, prompting head coach Damaine Powell to clear his bench, and allowing reserve Alfred Sterling to garner his first points of the year at the 5:05 mark.

Defense again caused havoc on a CSUDH opponent, with the Toros holding an opponent to under 50 points for the third-consecutive contest, and the fourth time in the past five games.

The Golden Eagles boasted just one player who reached the 10-point mark in Chris Fields, who was held to 3-for-11 shooting from the floor.  Dwayne Jones, who earlier had his way against the Toros in CSULA's win, made just 3-of-9 shots for 8 points, as the hosts misfired to the tune of 26.7% shooting on the night, including just 15.0% from long range.

CSUDH, meanwhile, connected on 46.2% of its attempts, with Tim McGrath leading the way with 11 points, and Davis, Aguilar, Michael Cox and James Cawthorne adding 10 points apiece in the laugher.

Winners of six of their last seven, the Toros face a stiffer challenge on Friday as perennial power Humboldt State visits Carson, with first tip on the "Dave Yanai Court" set for 7:30 pm.
