Toros Ring in New Year in Style in 86-71 Win Over Cal State East Bay


CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team grabbed their second straight win in a 86-71 victory over the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay to open 2010 play in the CCAA.  In her first game in action in the new season, Neka Mixon grabbed a double-double with 20 points and 12 boards to lead the Toros.

Also scoring 20-plus, Whitney Gantt added 21 points to her season total of 97, giving CSUDH their first game of the 2009-10 campaign with two scorers in the 20+ range.

The Toros outshot the Pioneers in both halves on a margin of 44.3% to 39.7%, eight of CSUDH's 21 field goals came from beyond the arc.

CCAA newcomer CSUEB featured impressive shooting as well with three Pioneers in double-digits.  Andrea Rodriguez finished with 18, Lauren Lucchesi with 12 and Amaris Sanders with 11.

The game-clincher came in picks, CSUDH grabbed 49 boards while allowing the visitors only 35.  Gantt added eight for the Toros with Kala Amico coming in at six.

The Pioneers controlled play for the first two minutes on the day, building their lead to 8-6. 

Two back-to-back treys from Gantt gave CSUDH a 12-8 lead which they held for the remaining 38-minutes of play. 

CSUDH grabbed their biggest lead of the day in the second half, allowing themselves a 16-point margin following a Gantt jumper.  With four-minutes left in regulation, Barbara Houston gave CSUDH the high lead of 16 yet again.

A final three form Gantt with :06 left gave the Toros the win, knotted at 86-71.

The win improves CSUDH's win-streak to two games while improving their record to 3-6 (2-2 CCAA).  The Toros will next see action as they take on the Tritons of UC San Diego, tomorrow with tip-off set at 1:00pm.
